Introduction The optimal foraging theory is an evolutionary model based on the predictability of animal foraging. This model is based on various adaptive principles such as: (1) the next generation depends upon the ability for the current generation to forage and prosper; (2) there is a genetic component to foraging that may be inherited; (3) finally, rate of foraging is related to the fitness of the organism (Pyke, 1977). The optimal foraging theory implies that foraging animals will leave a quantity of resources, or what is known as “give up density” (GUD), after the amount of energy gained from the nutrients is less than the amount of energy lost in attempts to obtain the nutrients (Wellborn 2002). Based on this concept it is hypothesized that food patches varying in density will be diminished to the same degree regardless of beginning density. This prediction from optimal foraging theory will be the main focus of the study. By testing both low and high density food patches at high and low elevations this study will examine if elevation has an impact upon nocturnal rodent foraging habits in two different desert environments.

As the raven flies: using genetic data to infer the history of invasive common raven (Corvus corax) populations in the Mojave Desert.

Common raven (Corvus corax) populations in Mojave Desert regions of southern California and Nevada have increased dramatically over the past five decades. This growth has been attributed to increased human development in the region, as ravens have a commensal relationship with humans and feed extensively at landfills and on road-killed wildlife. Ravens, as a partially subsidized predator, also ...

Aspergillus flavus and Aflatoxin Contamination of Leguminous Trees of the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.

ABSTRACT Aspergillus spp. in section Flavi were frequently associated with desert tree legumes in uncultivated areas of the Sonoran Desert. Of 270 samples of debris and fruits of mesquite (Prosopis spp.), ironwood (Olneya tesota), acacia (Acacia spp.), and palo verde (Cercidium and Parkinsonia spp.), 87% were positive for A. flavus (S and L strains) and A. tamarii. A. flavus was the most common...

Composition and structure of a Fagus orientalis-dominated forest managed with shelterwood aim (A Case study in the Caspian forests, northern Iran)

Composition and structure of a three-storied Fagus orientalis-dominated forest was investigated in the Caspian forests, north of Iran. Circular sampling plots of 1000 m2 occupied by advance growth and natural regeneration were randomly chosen where the initial cuttings (with shelterwood aim) were performed. Abundance of species at different growth stages and quality of seedlings and saplings we...

Study of plant diversity in the Northern Zagros forest (Case study: Marivan region)

Silvicultural operation need to notice the species diversity. To this study Gomarlang district in marivan region, northern zagros forest was selected. In this study 30 circle sample plots (500 m2) were collected by random method. In every sample plot the kind of species and number of trees and shrub were recorded. In the sample plots the micro plots of 5 m by 5 m (i.e. area of 25 m2) were desig...
